Green Connections – Nature-based Solutions and Sustainable Management in the Austrian- Hungarian Border Region
(Interreg AT-HU, Operation of Strategic Importance)
Green Connections is a cross-border Interreg project led by Széchenyi István University, focusing on biodiversity-friendly farming and nature-based solutions in the Austrian-Hungarian border region. The project combines scientific research, practical farming experience and stakeholder engagement to address biodiversity loss in agricultural landscapes. Its core activity is a large-scale biodiversity monitoring programme implemented on 80 arable farms in Austria and Hungary, covering both conventional and ecological farming systems.
Based on the research results, the partnership develops practical recommendations for sustainable farming, supports knowledge transfer through AKIS and advisory networks, and promotes public engagement through citizen science and demonstration activities.
The project brings together universities, protected area managers, farmers, advisory organisations and civil society actors to strengthen long-term cross-border cooperation and the practical uptake of biodiversity-friendly agricultural practices.
